When the Primacare medical group decided to offer Chinese medicine alongside western medicine in their medical centres around Dublin, we were delighted to take the opportunity to try to replicate what we have learnt from the health care system in China where different systems of medicine work together for the benefit of the patients.
Traditional Chinese Medicine, commonly referred to as "Chinese Medicine" or simply "TCM", is one of the oldest forms of medical treatment and one of the most commonly used in the world. Its origins date back over 2000 years and it has stood the test of time remaining the main form of medicine used in China today.
Nowadays, it has reached all corners of the world and has been widely used with more and more people availing of its benefits.
In Ireland, TCM has been steadily growing in popularity and it is now one of the safest and fastest growing medical therapies in the country.
TCM is made up of many different types of therapies - the most commonly know of which is acupuncture. Less known, but also very important within the context of Chinese Medicine are: tuina massage, cupping, moxibustion (heat treatment with a slow burning herb - mugwort), herbal medicine, medical qigong, dietary therapy, exercise (Qigong, Taiji) and lifestyle advice.
Chinese Medicine is one of the recognised Complementary and Alternative Medicines (CAM) by the World Health Organization (WHO).
针 灸 Acupuncture and fertility treatment
In Ireland, acupuncture is probably the best-known medical therapy of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Acupuncture can treat anybody from the very young (babies) to the very old, the general and more complex complaints of men, women and children. It can also be very beneficial to women in the before, during and after care in pregnancy.
TCM and acupuncture helps regulating your body's system. In recent years it has increasingly been used as a complementary therapy for women undergoing fertility treatments. Many scientific and medical studies have proven that acupuncture combined with fertility programmes increases the couple's chances of conceiving.

Acupuncture and tuina massage for the treatment of arthritis
“Arthritis” in TCM terms is referred to as “Bì Syndrome” and this condition is commonly seen in the clinic.
It affects men and women of all ages and although less frequent, it is also seen in young adults and children. Arthritis shows itself with symptoms such as pain, swelling and restricted movement. Typically, what we see presenting in the clinic is: joint aches and pain, numbness in the muscles, lack of free movement in the tendons and restriction of movement in bones and joints.
Within the system of medicine that is TCM, acupuncture and tuina massage are the therapies that are most commonly used for the treatment of arthritis. Often, these two therapies can be combined together or with cupping, Chinese herbal prescriptions, dietary therapy and exercise for example.
Arthritis Ireland is Ireland's only arthritis charity enabling people with arthritis to take their lives back. They provide real solutions and empower people with arthritis and those caring for them to take positive actions to manage the effects of their disease on their lives.
